Maison of Fine Leather Craft
Fine Leather Craft
Fine leather craft is the French expression of the exceptional bag. It brings together three inseparable requirements : noble leathers selected hide by hide in tanneries of tradition, artisanal gestures handed down through generations, and master finishes that reveal the material without ever betraying it.
More than a product category, it is a discipline. Every bag takes shape by hand, over dozens of hours of work. Joséphine Paris stands within this tradition of excellence, with a contemporary signature : clean lines, a liane green velvet calfskin lining, and the promise of a piece that endures across seasons.

The leathers
French tanneries, certified
Joséphine Paris leathers come exclusively from French tanneries certified by the LWG (Leather Working Group). This certification guarantees full traceability and environmental control throughout the tanning chain.
The full-grain calfskin, dense and supple, catches the light without distorting it. The velvet calfskin lining in liane green — the Maison’s signature colour — extends the tactile experience to the gesture of opening.
The hardware
Solid brass, gold galvanisation
Buckles, snap hooks, clasps and the collar button are designed bespoke for the Maison. Gold-galvanised solid brass systematically replaces plated zinc alloy — a structural choice that ensures weight, hold and lasting éclat.
Edges are softened, pivots polished, screws concealed. It is this attention to these millimetres that separates fine leather craft from ordinary production.

The gestures
Saddle stitch, paring, finishing
Pattern-cut, edge paring, meticulous gluing, two-needle saddle stitch in waxed linen thread — the sequence of gestures is unchanging. Each leather artisan spends several years mastering it.
- • Saddle stitch : two needles, waxed linen thread, 6 to 8 stitches per centimetre
- • Edges dyed and burnished with beeswax, over multiple passes
- • Hardware assembled with caliper precision
- • Hand-by-hand quality control before packaging
“Fine leather craft is never improvised. It is handed down, gesture by gesture, from the atelier to the piece that will endure.”
Every Joséphine Paris bag is the outcome of a collective work. It is also designed to be repaired : our Parisian after-sales service restores leather, stitching and hardware for the life of the piece.

Questions
About fine leather craft
What is fine leather craft?
Fine leather craft refers to the making of leather bags and accessories crafted with exceptional artisanal techniques: noble leathers selected from certified tanneries, hand saddle-stitched seams, assembly and finishing by leather artisans trained over several years. It is distinguished from ordinary leather goods by the demand for materials, the precision of gestures, and the durability of every piece.
Which leathers are used in fine leather craft?
Maisons of fine leather craft favour full-grain calfskin, selected hide by hide at the tannery. Joséphine Paris works exclusively with French tanneries certified by the LWG (Leather Working Group), ensuring traceability and controlled environmental impact. The smooth calfskin exterior is lined with velvet calfskin, for a hand and structure characteristic of French luxury.
Where are Joséphine Paris bags made?
All Joséphine Paris bags are crafted by hand in France, in partner leather ateliers selected for their mastery of the saddle stitch and their finishing standards. Each piece is the outcome of dozens of hours of artisanal work.
How long does it take to craft a fine leather bag?
A fine leather bag requires between 15 and 40 hours of manual work depending on the complexity of the design. Cutting the leather, paring, gluing, saddle stitching, assembling hardware and wax-finishing are all steps that demand precision and time.
How can one recognise a fine leather craft bag?
Several markers are characteristic: perfect regularity of the saddle stitches (typically 2 mm, waxed linen thread), edges dyed and burnished by hand, hardware in galvanised solid brass (not plated zinc alloy), full leather or velvet lining, and a living leather grain that reveals the tannery’s craft. Joséphine Paris applies all of these standards.
