Knowing the origin of the leather of your bag should go without saying.

At Joséphine Paris, our vision of a responsible leather craft begins long before the atelier. It is written from the very choice of the material. That is why we do everything to build relationships of trust and transparency with our partners. We see it as a form of rigour in the traceability of our resources.

From the raw hide to the finished piece, here is how we select our materials for a sustainable leather respectful of the planet.

Responsible sourcing from the raw material onward

It all begins with the selection of hides. We work exclusively with partners connected to certified French and European agricultural sectors. This choice guarantees breeding conditions that meet strict standards of animal welfare.

This fundamental principle is our first filter, non-negotiable. Every hide comes with complete traceability documentation, from the farm to the tannery. We also receive on a regular basis the guarantees needed to verify that our partners are truly in contact with the players of their sector (breeders, integrators, veterinarians, farming technicians and others). It is a whole world that works to elevate the material, and one we can follow almost step by step in their commitment.

The selection is also technical: we retain only the hides presenting the fewest possible defects, which guarantees not only the aesthetic quality of the final piece, but also an optimal use of the material. Fewer offcuts and less waste constitute a form of additional respect towards the resource, and one of our principal duties as a player of a responsible leather craft.

We collaborate with a tight-knit network of tanneries selected for their transparency and their environmental certifications.

Tanneries HAAS

An Alsatian Maison founded in 1842, it perfectly embodies the values we defend. For six generations, it has perpetuated an exceptional savoir-faire by working exclusively with French and European calf leathers. The HAAS tanneries supply our full-grain calfskin for the outer surfaces of our designs — a hide with an incomparable touch.

Tanneries ROUX

Founded in 1803 in Romans-sur-Isère in the Drôme region, the Roux tanneries are one of the historic pillars of French leather craft. They work with major French abattoirs, eliminating intermediaries to guarantee total traceability. Choosing to trust them to supply the velvet calfskin of our linings allows each of our designs to begin its story with a traced material, worked with care and selected to endure.

Among the certifications we require from our partners:

LWG (Leather Working Group): independent audit of the environmental practices of tanneries, with a Gold or Silver rating only.
REACH: compliance with European regulations on the chemical substances used in tanning.
EPV: Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, the guarantee of a rare and ancestral artisanal savoir-faire.
Innovative processes linked to water reduction and the substitution of traditional chemical products by bio-based alternatives.

All our leathers are guaranteed free of harmful substances.

Environmental impact — what a sustainable leather really changes

Massive use of hexavalent chromium, wastewater laden with heavy metals, considerable water consumption — when it does not observe sustainable practices, tanning is one of the most polluting industries of textile.

The sustainable leather we use distinguishes itself on several concrete points:

Certified low-impact tanning: significant reduction of harmful chemical substances.
Water management: our partners have systems for the treatment and recycling of process water.
Reduced carbon footprint: French sourcing to limit long-distance transport.
Product durability: an ethical-quality leather, well cared for, lasts decades — that is in itself the best answer to fast fashion.

The leather offcuts resulting from the tanning process are systematically valorised: compacted, recycled or redirected towards other industrial sectors. Nothing is discarded by default. This logic of circular economy applied to the raw material is, for us, a selection criterion in its own right.

An ethical leather is not only a matter of environment. It is also a matter of people. Behind every hide we use are breeders who respect their animals, tanners who master techniques transmitted across generations, and artisans who transform this material with the greatest care.

Working with partners such as the HAAS and Roux tanneries also means supporting human-scale companies rooted in their territories, who keep rare savoir-faire alive. It means refusing systematic offshoring and the race to the bottom. It means choosing a sector that has a face, a story, an anchorage.

The durability of an ethical leather lies in its manufacturing, but also in the way one cares for it day to day. A quality leather, correctly maintained, reveals itself over time and gains in depth. It develops a unique patina, carries the traces of its use with elegance and resists the years without losing its hold.

We recommend that our clients regularly care for their pieces with natural nourishing products, protect them from humidity and prolonged exposure to light, and finally store them sheltered from dust in the protection bag offered at the time of purchase. These simple gestures will considerably prolong the life of your piece.

To choose a design in sustainable leather is also to choose not to multiply purchases. It is the antithesis of disposable fast fashion and undoubtedly the most responsible act there is.
