Leather tote or canvas tote — which material to choose for your design?

Before comparing, it is worth defining. These three materials are commonly used in fine leather craft, but they do not answer the same manufacturing exigencies nor the same expectations in use.

• The full-grain leather tote

Full-grain leather is the noblest material used in leather craft. It is the choice Maison Joséphine Paris made for its ÉCLAT leather tote. The leather comes from the upper layer of the animal's hide, where the natural structure of the leather is densest and most resistant. Unlike rectified or corrected leathers, full-grain leather is neither sanded nor reworked at the surface. Its grain — that is to say its outer side — is preserved intact. This gives it a unique texture, slightly irregular, with natural variations of grain that make its visual signature. Over time, it develops a characteristic patina that deepens its colour and accentuates its character. It is precisely this evolution that makes it a living material sought after by connoisseurs.

• The treated leather tote

Treated leather — also called corrected full-grain leather or "coated leather" — has undergone surface treatments intended to even out its appearance and reinforce its resistance to external aggressions. It can be pigmented, varnished, waxed or covered with a protective film. The appearance is more homogeneous, the colours sharper and more stable over time. This treatment makes care easier and renders the material less sensitive to humidity and stains. In return, treated leather develops less patina, or none at all, and its appearance remains more uniform across time.

• The coated canvas tote

Coated canvas is a textile, generally cotton or linen, covered with a layer of synthetic material or wax that gives it waterproofness and resistance. Historically associated with the great travel Maisons, it has imposed itself in fine leather craft as a light and graphic alternative to the leather tote. A canvas tote lends itself particularly well to prints and repeating motifs.

The durability of a luxury tote depends both on its manufacturing quality and on the bag material chosen to craft it.

The full-grain leather tote

Well cared for, it is without question the most durable material. Its dense structure and tight fibres allow it to withstand decades of use. Full-grain leather bags are those one finds in family inheritances, intact and more beautiful than on the first day. It is a heritage investment as much as an aesthetic one.

Treated leather

It offers excellent durability in the medium term. Its protected surface better withstands the aggressions of the everyday, but can show signs of wear on areas of frequent contact: handles, corners, edges.

Coated canvas tote

Solid and resistant in normal conditions of use, canvas remains more vulnerable to tears and abrasion than the leather tote. It is particularly suited to travel formats or occasional uses rather than to intensive daily carry.
