Tote bag — which format to choose?

Small, medium or large tote — what are the differences?
The size of a tote is generally measured in width, height and depth. These three dimensions directly determine the capacity of the bag, its allure when carried, and how well it suits your silhouette.
The small tote
The small design generally displays a width between 25 and 32 cm. Compact but not lacking in character, it suits perfectly for light outings: lunch in town, evening out, weekend without luggage. Its structure, most often supple or semi-rigid, allows it to slip under the arm or to be carried on the shoulder with natural ease.
Average capacity: wallet, phone, keys, small notebook. Ideal for 3 to 5 essentials.
The medium tote
The medium format, between 33 and 42 cm wide, is the most versatile. It represents the heart of the range of many fine leather craft collections, and for good reason: it adapts as well to a working day as to a weekend trip. You can fit an A4-format laptop, documents, a pouch — while keeping a slender silhouette.
Average capacity: 13-inch laptop, diary, make-up pouch, water bottle. The ally of the active everyday.
The large tote
From 43 cm wide onwards, we enter the category of the large tote, also called the XL tote. It is the ideal companion for train travel, intense days, professional trips. Some designs reach 50 to 55 cm, offering a capacity close to that of a small carry-on.
Average capacity: light change of clothing, flat shoes, 15-inch laptop, toiletry bag. The bag that travels with you.

Choosing your tote dimension according to your use
Choosing the right dimension for your tote means above all answering a simple question: what is this accessory going to be used for?
For everyday use in the city
In an urban context, the medium tote imposes itself as the reference. It holds the essentials of a day — laptop, diary, personal accessories — without weighing down the silhouette or cluttering on public transport. Its width of 35 to 40 cm offers an optimal balance between capacity and carrying comfort.
For strictly personal use without professional equipment
For this kind of need, the small tote is more than enough. It adds a note of refinement to a city outfit without overloading your allure.
For travel and trips
The large tote reveals its full potential here. Used as a complementary cabin bag or as a main travel bag for a short stay, it offers a generous capacity while remaining elegant. For air travel, please check that the dimensions of your tote are compatible with your airline's carry-on standards. Most large totes from fine leather craft Maisons respect these constraints.
For special occasions and city outings
The small tote imposes itself naturally. Business lunch, art gallery, opening, dinner — this format adds a touch of personality without ever weighing down the outfit. Its measured size forces a focus on the essential, which gives it a particular elegance.

Choosing your tote format according to your morphology
The size of a tote interacts directly with the silhouette of the woman who carries it. These are not strict rules but a few useful landmarks for a harmonious result.
Here is our advice:
For petite figures (under 1.65 m)
A large tote carried on the shoulder can visually crush a fine and slight silhouette. We will favour small and medium designs whose proportions naturally accord with a light stature. The ideal width is between 28 and 38 cm. Crossbody or shoulder carry lengthens the silhouette.
For taller figures (over 1.65 m)
Taller women can carry all formats with ease. The large tote finds its natural balance here: its generous dimensions echo an assertive stature without appearing disproportionate. Shoulder carry, for a bag falling to hip height, creates a harmonious line.
For intermediate silhouettes
The medium tote is universally flattering. It suits all morphologies and is a safe investment if you are hesitating between two formats.

In summary
Here are the three questions to ask before choosing the format of your tote:
What is my main use? Light everyday, full working day or travel — the answer points directly to small, medium or large.
What is my morphology? A fine silhouette will gain in harmony with a compact or medium format; a taller stature can embrace all formats.
What is my relationship with capacity? Some like to travel light and find it easier to discipline themselves with a small bag. Others need to have everything within reach: the large tote is made for them.
At Joséphine Paris, our luxury tote ÉCLAT is conceived to belong to a real life, with dimensions calibrated to combine elegance and function.
